Supergraphics’ Path to Carbon Neutrality by 2025
SEATTLE – To our esteemed partners and eco-advocates, Happy Earth Day,
Each Earth Day invites us to pause and reflect—a chance to look at our journey towards sustainability and renew our commitment. At SuperGraphics, we use this moment to consider our environmental impact and reinvigorate our dedication to eco-friendly practices. For us, sustainability is about more than just meeting standards; it’s about a continuous improvement in pioneering and executing sustainable practices.
We would like to share a few milestones that we’ve reached with your support:
- We achieved certification from the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) in March 2023.
- We transitioned to a new, more efficient building, reducing waste from reprints in June 2023.
- We recycled over 50 metric tons of graphic waste in 2023.
- We successfully hosted our first Sustainability Summit in March 2024.
We are grateful for the opportunity to pursue these initiatives and excited about our major goal ahead: achieving carbon neutrality in 2025.
A Pledge for a Greener Tomorrow
Our pledge to become carbon neutral manifests itself in several key areas of our operations:
- Environmental Responsibility: As a large format printing company, SuperGraphics recognizes the impact of its operations on the environment. By striving for carbon neutrality, we take a proactive step in reducing emissions and contributing to the global effort against climate change.
- Sustainable Business Practices: Moving towards carbon neutrality aligns with our sustainable business model – EcoFormat®. This involves adopting energy-efficient practices, using sustainable materials, and innovating in waste management.
- Corporate Leadership: At SuperGraphics, our efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality are guided by a deep commitment to environmental responsibility within our industry. This endeavor is not just about enhancing our products, but about continuously improving and adhering to sustainable and ethical business practices.
SuperGraphics was certified by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) in March 2023. Being SGP certified highlights our commitment to meeting and, where possible, exceeding industry standards for sustainability and eco-ethical business practices. This certification assures our clients of SuperGraphics’ ongoing dedication to responsible and sustainable printing solutions.
We have been working within the framework of SGP and other third-party certifiers to better track and address our carbon emissions. This year, we are excited to announce that we are on track for carbon neutrality in 2025.
Achieving carbon neutrality at SuperGraphics involves addressing emissions across three distinct scopes:
- Scope 1: Direct Emissions: These are emissions directly produced by our manufacturing and operations.
- Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Purchased Energy: This scope includes emissions resulting from the energy we purchase, like electricity, heating, and cooling.
- Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions: These emissions are the most challenging to address, as they encompass all other indirect emissions from activities not owned or directly controlled by SuperGraphics, such as business travel, employee commuting, and the lifecycle of purchased products.
In addressing these scopes, SuperGraphics is meticulously monitoring operations and documenting all usage.
On the Frontline of Eco-Responsibility
This section highlights key efforts and insights into how we’re actively working to minimize emissions:
- Emission Tracking and Reduction Targets: We are actively measuring our carbon emissions and setting clear targets for reduction. Working with third-party certifiers, we are developing a roadmap to lower emissions at every stage.
- Eco-Friendly Materials: Transitioning to sustainable materials is a key part of our strategy. This includes using PVC-free substrates and recyclable materials wherever possible, thereby reducing our reliance on non-renewable resources.
- Employee Training and Engagement: Educating our staff about the importance of sustainability and how they can contribute is vital. We strongly encourage eco-friendly practices within the workplace.
Recently, SuperGraphics proudly hosted its first-ever Sustainability Summit. This event served not only as a platform to showcase sustainable alternatives but also as a living example of our environmental ethos in action. We eagerly look forward to repeating its success in the future.
Together for a Greener Planet
SuperGraphics is committed to making a positive impact on our environment, which led us to align with the mission of One Tree Planted, a leader in the Carbon Credit and Carbon Neutrality market. This alignment includes carbon credit purchasing and partnering on planting trees.
Each tree planted through this partnership is a step towards mitigating climate change, enhancing air quality, and supporting ecosystems that are vital for biodiversity. By integrating our business goals with meaningful environmental action, SuperGraphics is establishing a roadmap for the large format industry, demonstrating how businesses can be powerful catalysts for positive environmental change
For Earth Day 2024, we are proud to announce the donation of 1,000 trees planted. Join us in our mission to make a positive impact on the environment. For every two trees you donate through Friday, April 26, SuperGraphics will contribute one additional tree, with a maximum donation cap of 5,000 trees. Our Green Milestones
In our journey towards carbon neutrality, tracking and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all scopes is critical. We are pleased to share our latest data, which reflects our ongoing efforts:
- Scope 1 (Direct Emissions): This year, we have established our baseline for direct emissions at 27.61 metric tons (MT) of GHG*. This measurement is crucial as we implement energy-efficient technologies and optimize our operational processes to plan future reductions.
- Scope 2 (Indirect Emissions from Purchased Energy): Our baseline for indirect emissions from purchased energy is 63.73 MT of GHG*. These figures represent our starting point, and they underscore the importance of our ongoing transition to renewable energy sources and enhanced energy efficiency in our facilities.
- Scope 3 (Other Indirect Emissions) **: We have initially recorded 33.13 MT of GHG* in Scope 3 emissions. As we continue to refine our data capturing methods, these initial measurements from optimizing our supply chain and promoting sustainable commuting practices among our employees will serve as a foundation for targeted improvements.
These figures are more than numbers; they show our commitment to environmental stewardship and a sustainable future. They indicate progress in our operations and our aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.
*Numbers based on 2023 calendar year usage
**It is important to note that our Scope 3 calculations are ongoing, and we are committed to providing a more comprehensive picture as we continue to refine our data collection and analysis processes.
